Spain passes comprehensive food waste law

On Thursday, Spanish Parliament passed a comprehensive food waste reduction law which will require supermarkets to donate surplus food and sell at least some amount of wonky vegetables and other “imperfect” foods in their displays. They will be asked to promote ecological, sustainable and seasonal, local products.
These measures aim for a reduction of 50% in consumption and retail and 20% for primary production and distribution, in line with the objectives of the Agenda 2030.
Other measures include requiring restaurants to provide clients with takeaway boxes and mandatory food waste plans throughout the food chain, starting from primary production.
1.2 million tonnes of food are wasted in Spain, every year. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), 30% of all food produced globally is wasted.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food will draft a National Food Waste Plan to supervise this regulation and measure outcomes.
