European Commission’s campaign on food safety

17 April 2026

The European Commission has launched a campaign on food safety in the EU, highlighting the policies implemented to support it. It aims to strengthen public understanding of how this system works and how it protects citizens every day. At SAFE, we support this initiative to educate the public about food safety procedures. We closely monitor the EU’s food safety commitments, making sure that European consumers are protected effectively. We identify loopholes in the current system and find areas where EU food safety rules could be strengthened.

In a context marked by new trade agreements, the setback on the authorisation of pesticides, water contamination, and other risks, food safety has never been more important. EU rules ensure that all food placed on the EU market meets high safety standards designed to protect consumers’ health. The EU food safety framework covers the entire food chain, from farm to fork, and sets strict requirements on hygiene, traceability, labelling, contaminants, additives, allergens, packaging and import controls.

The slogan of the campaign, “Love it. Hate it. Trust it!”, illustrates the idea that tastes can differ, but that food safety is a shared concern.
