Poland withdraws Nutriscore, deeming it misleading
07 October 2026
Poland’s decided to withdraw the Nutriscore labelling from supermarkets across the country, after consultations with industry and scientific organisations. Front-of-package labelling displaying Nutriscore ratings will be phased-out by the end of 2028, with an extra two-year period to deplete stocks.
The decision was taken in September.
Poland is one of seven EU countries who had implemented this labelling system, starting with France in 2017, while other EU countries like Italy have strongly opposed it deeming it too simple and misleading.
SAFE’s position, too, is that Nutriscore is too simple to provide valuable information, and that it unfairly penalizes certain products. It therefore does not contribute to strengthening consumer protection and food literacy, in SAFE’s view.
