HEALTHY MEAL PROJECT

Inclusion starts with food.

The Healthy Meal initiative is one of the main projects within the ESF+ operating grant Food4Inclusion. Healthy Meal promotes social inclusion by partnering up with restaurants to provide disadvantaged people with sustainable, healthy and affordable meals.

Current crises are leading many countries to face increasing levels of severe food insecurity. With global poverty on the rise and inequalities exacerbated, particularly by the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine, vulnerable households with low incomes across Europe are seen as the main victims.

Impoverishment has led to a segment of the population having to forgo non-essential socialising activities, such as a meal at a restaurant.

But above all, many households have found themselves having to change their consumption habits to cope with rising energy prices, falling back on buying cheaper and less healthy food. The mismatch between income and the rising cost of living has brought consequences that will be difficult to reverse in the short term, and the impact on the nutrition of disadvantaged households is one of them.

Today, millions of people have no other choice than buying unhealthy food.

SAFE is here to support them via the Healthy Meal initiative.

How does Healthy Meal work?

The initiative not only supports the need for disadvantaged persons and families to access balanced, healthy and sustainable meals, and help them adopt healthier eating habits, but also promotes their socialisation and inclusion.

To date, the project has been launched in several European countries: Belgium, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, and Romania.
