Joint Letter – Unlock Agriculture’s Climate Action Potential for Climate and Food System Resilience
05 June 2025
SAFE and other civil society and farming organisations have expressed concern over the potential weakening of the EU’s 2040 climate targets, urging the Commission to prioritise ambitious domestic action rather than relying on risky loopholes or failed carbon offset schemes. They highlight the untapped potential of agriculture to contribute to climate goals through agroecological practices, structural reforms, and healthier diets, which could reduce emissions by up to 60%. The letter calls for binding sectoral targets, systemic changes across the agri-food chain, and robust support for farmers to ensure a sustainable and resilient future for European agriculture.
