03 January 2024
Renewable, recyclable and compostable packaging is becoming increasingly important for consumers and businesses. A recent report by Food Navigator, highlighted the importance of sustainable packaging for Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) businesses, which include food and drinks. Due to a growing consumer demand, conscious consumer choices and regulatory requirements sustainability has evolved from trend to a crucial aspect of FMCG operations. Nowadays, consumers are increasingly environmentally aware, which leads them to seek packaging that is renewable, recyclable and compostable. As reported by Food Navigator, research suggests that the market for sustainable products is expanding at a significant speed. A considerable proportion of consumers place a high value on sustainability and base their decisions on how packaging affects the environment.
A study by McKinsey & Company and NielsenQ underlines the correlation between consumer spending and sustainability related claims on product packaging, which supports the move towards sustainable practices and the adoption of paper-based packaging. A Euromonitor research found that 44% of consumers choose sustainable packaging and prioritise recycling claims over specific materials used.
