Spain passes law promoting healthier meals and dietary habits in schools
16 April 2025
On Tuesday, Spain’s government adopted a decree requiring school canteens to offer healthier meals and banning unhealthy snacks from vending machines in schools. The measure, presented by minister of Social Rights and Consumer Affairs Pablo Bustinduy, will promote fish, pulses, and whole grains and will force canteens to serve freshly cooked meals, severely limiting precooked and deep-fried foods.
The measure aims at guaranteeing a healthy nutritional intake by disadvantaged children and at improving child nutrition, generally.
50% of Spanish children from lower-income families — under € 18,0007 year— are overweight.
Industrial bakery, snacks, and sodas will be forbidden from vending machines in schools and water will be the only drink served with meals.
