SAFE’s Secretary General and Deputy Director at Santiago Conference

01 December 2023

SAFE’s Secretary General and Deputy Director were speakers at the Congreso Internacional de Consumo in Santiago (Spain), participating in critical discussion regarding the evolving legislative framework for Sustainable Food Systems (FSFS) within the European Union.

Key discussions focused on the adoption of a legislative framework for FSFS by the European Commission, emphasising policy coherence at both EU levels and national levels. The proposed sustainability labelling framework seeks to empower consumers by providing comprehensive information on food product sustainability. The event reviewed the draft FSFS Principles, which emphasise sustainability in its environmental, social and economic dimensions. Concerns were raised about the absence of the precautionary principle among these defined principles.

SAFE’s speech concluded with a call for consumer organisations to join forces to defend consumer interests and a commitment to fight misleading labelling practices and promote transparent food systems.
