Bulgaria: Pesticide with EU-banned substance still widely used in Bulgarian agriculture

The investigative journalist Valia Ahchieva published a video showing a sad reality in Bulgaria: The Mocap, a plant protection product containing an ingredient banned by the EU is not only used, but subsidised by the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture.

The ethoprophos contained in this “Mocap” is a highly toxic substance and is used in potatoes crops to control the wireworms. The “emergency situation” called by the Bulgarian authorities to justify the use of this product is doubtfull, but the authority in charge of the control of compliance with the EU law in Bulgaria is the one that authorized the use of the Mocap.
