TYPE of Membership
SAFE has two different types of membership:
⇒ Organisations:
- Organisations involved in promoting consumer protection independent from the agro food Industry and its lobby.
⇒ Experts:
- Experts, independent from the agro food industry;
- Research centres and Universities.
BENEFITS of Membership
SAFE members play an active role in the organisation’s advocacy work. Our team maintains close and regular contact with all key stakeholders involved in the EU legislative process, including Members of the European Parliament, officials from the European Commission, and representatives of the Permanent Representations of EU Member States. Transparency is a cornerstone of SAFE’s advocacy strategy, and our position papers are shared directly with the appropriate decision‑makers. SAFE secretariat will support members to get access to their national decision makers in the European Parliament.
Members are kept informed of every meeting and have the opportunity to contribute directly to the drafting of SAFE’s position papers. Our primary objective is to influence EU legislation in the interest of consumers, ensuring that European food laws better protect public health.
While the positions expressed by SAFE do not always reflect the full diversity of opinions within our membership, we strive to reach consensus whenever possible in order to secure broad support for our advocacy work.
SAFE members are regularly informed about latest activities in the food legislation sector and they receive a bi-monthly internal e-newsletter.
Here are some of the ways you can contribute to SAFE’s mission:
- Actively participate in SAFE’s core activities, including working groups, meetings, and collaborative initiatives that help shape our advocacy work.
- Support the organisation of seminars and trainings in Brussels and across EU Member States aimed at educating consumers on key food-related topics—such as understanding food labels (e.g., the meaning of E650 or E450), additives, colorants, pesticides, and GMOs—and raising awareness about the impact of the food industry on consumer health and the environment.
- Join a growing network of reputable scientists whose voices are often overshadowed by the agro-food industry. This includes helping organize scientific seminars, sharing their research on our website, and contributing to the development of an international network of independent experts committed to safer food for all.
