SAFE releases a report in partnership with Healthy Food Healthy Planet on regulating HFSS marketing to children

SAFE updated its report on high-fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) Food Marketing targeting children, in partnership with Healthy Food Healthy Planet. This report highlights how widespread marketing of HFSS foods harms children, while fragmented EU policies and weak industry self-regulation allow the problem to persist. By analysing seven countries (Spain, France, Denmark, Ireland, Chile, Canada, and the UK), the report identifies regulatory gaps and proposes stronger protections for children and clearer accountability for large food companies. Key recommendations include an EU-wide ban on HFSS marketing to children, clearer front‑of‑pack warnings, stricter retail placement rules, better enforcement, and public awareness campaigns to promote healthier eating.
