ZeroW and CHORIZO projects’ joint final conference – 16 September 2025
17 September 2025
The joint final conference of the ZeroW and CHORIZO projects on 16 September offered insights and innovative solutions to tackle food loss and waste (FLW) across Europe. ZeroW is a Horizon-funded project in which SAFE is a partner. The initiative aims to become a leading force in reducing Food Loss and Waste (FLW) by leveraging systemic innovation. It supports a dual ambition: to cut FLW by half by 2030, in line with the Green Deal’s Farm to Fork Strategy, and to establish the necessary conditions for achieving near-zero FLW by 2050.
CHORIZO is a project co-funded by Horizon Europe programme that aims to improve the understanding between social norms, consumer behaviours and economic actor decisions and FLW generation and use this knowledge to improve the effectiveness of decision-making and engagement of food chain actors, towards zero food waste.
Klaus Berend, from DG SANTE, highlighted what he considered to be ambitious FLW targets recently adopted by the EU, and the essential role of cross-sector collaboration.
Project coordinators Anna George and Lies Messely showcased how both projects complement each other—merging systemic innovation with behavioural shift.
From live demos of Systemic Innovation Living Labs (SILLs) and data-driven tools, to educational games and packaging innovations, the conference presented ideas to drive real change.
Anouck Guillou and Antonio De Carluccio from SAFE closed the day with a future-oriented panel on policy and regulation, exploring how to overcome barriers and shape a fair, sustainable food system.
